Becoming a Volunteer

Volunteers contribute enormously and are invaluable to our work. We currently have volunteers in our shop, projects, on our Board and in fundraising. You will be part of a team and work in an open and friendly environment.

The first step is to fill in an application form and send it to us. If you meet our requirements, you will be asked to attend for a brief interview. Although this sounds formal, it is intended as an opportunity for us to get to know each other, to enable us both to assess our compatibility, and to find out how your skills and talents can be used to best effect.

Full-time Volunteering

Full-time volunteers commit 39 hours per week for a commitment of 6 – 12 months. Galway Simon Community currently has 10 full-time volunteers from all over the world. They stay at accommodation provided by Galway Simon Community, and also receive a weekly allowance.

Our Full Time Volunteer Programme is supported by The European Voluntary Service (EVS), part of the EU Youth Programme. Their assistance and support is fundamental in helping us to maintain this level of full time volunteering.

Full-time volunteers work alongside experienced staff and are posted to the following projects – Men’s High Support, Women’s High Support and our Resettlement Project. The tasks are varied but on an average shift the volunteer will find themselves involved in the general household and administration duties associated with project work. However the most important aspect of this work is the development of positive working relationships with the people who use our services. The work includes advocating on behalf of people, supporting people in leisure activities and where necessary assisting people with physical needs.

EVS Volunteers

EVS, which is administered by Léargas, funds volunteers from one European country to spend time – typically six to 12 months – working as a volunteer in a not-for-profit organisation in another country. Everyone benefits: the volunteer gains experience and skills and an insight into a different way of living, while the host organisation, and those it cares for, benefit from the energy and enthusiasm of the young person, while learning about another culture.

All costs, including the pre-departure training, travel, accommodation and subsistence are paid; volunteers also receive a small monthly allowance as ‘pocket money’ during the project.

The EVS is open to young people between 18 and 25 years. This means that volunteers have to be between 18 and 25 years old at the beginning of their voluntary activity. Flexibility can be applied to the upper age limit – young people with fewer opportunities may be 26 years old at the start of their voluntary activity if it is justified. For more details on EVS Volunteering please checkout http://www.leargas.ie/ for more information.
